The declaration for the Town Council of Lanzarote by UNESCO as a reserve of the biosphere was unusual in the World Network as most of the other biosphere reserves were protected and unpopulated land areas.

After a conference in 1995 UNESCO approved the Seville Strategy whose main purpose for the 21st century consist of learning how to make a better job of what we do worng today in the future, particulary in the preservation of beautiful landscapes.

Lanzerote began it's journey as a reserve of the biosphere in 1996, creating the council of the biosphere reserve of Lanzarote.
