Cesar Manrique devoted his whole life to his native island of Lanzarote and under his supervision the Council of Lanzarote created the Centre of Arts, Culture and Tourism. Born in 1919 he became famous in the Canary Islands as early as 1938. In 1948 his work as an artist recieved the consecration it deserved in madrid. In 1963 some of his works were exhibited in America and the critics loved him ! In 1968 Manrique realised the harmful effects that tourisum was having on the landscape, the fever of building new hotels had siezed developers regardless of the effect on the landscape. |
